Fundraising Walk

Mitchelstown GAA along with our friends in Mitchelstown/Ballygiblin Juvenile GAA , St. Fanahan's Camogie & Mitchelstown Ladies Football Clubs are undertaking a Fundraising Walk on Sunday 29th May . 100% of the proceeds raised will go directly towards the installation costs of ball-stop netting structures behind the goals & to the continued developement of O'Connell Park GAA Grounds. The walk will take place in Glengarra Woods, starting at 11am & there will be guided 5km & 10km routes to choose from on the day which will be safe & well marked out.   We will have plenty of refreshments in Kilbehenny Community Centre afterwards to help soothe your weary bodies & treats for the younger walkers. All in all it promises to be a great day out for friends & families to get involved in so please keep us in mind when you see the sponsorship cards around in the next couple of weeks  & if you intend walking then please contact John Walsh 0879366081 , Des McCarthy 0866014834 or Edward Horgan 0874179792 who will be happy to  give you further details & arrange a sponsorship card for you. Games

Our intermediate footballers played two games last week.

We travelled to Galbally to take on the local side in a challenge game at the start of the week & despite a disappointing start to the game where we found ourselves 9 points to 1-01 down at half time, we worked our way back into things & battled hard in the 2nd half to pull ourselves back into the game & with each team & the referee having different results recorded at the end of the game, the main thing was that we got a good game under our belts in difficult conditions.

Team; L. Hanna, J. Mullins, A. Donegan, K. Roche, F. Herlihy, R. Donegan, P. Molloy, S. Walsh, P. Magee, S. Doyle, S. O’Sullivan, C. English, J. Sheehan, D. Sheehan, D. Reidy Price.

Next up was the County League on Saturday 14th where we traveled to Kanturk to take on the Premier Intermediate finalists of the previous two years.

Kanturk 1-21

Mitchelstown 3-08

On Saturday last, we traveled to Kanturk to take on the Premier Intermediate finalists of the previous two years in Round 6 of the Cork Credit Unions Div.2B County Football League.

Two early points from play from Kanturk were quickly answered by Mitchelstown's Cormac Hyland, Sean O’Sullivan & Dave Dineen all kicking lovely scores from play to have us leading after 6 mins.

Kanturk then added 4 points in a row before Stephen Kenneally kick a free from the left hand side & Dineen popped over his second point from play leave us trailing by 0-06 to 0-05 after 17 mins. We  went further behind before a brilliant long range goal from Sean Walsh had the game level at 0-08 to 1-05 on the 24th minute.

This was as good a football game as you’d get at this time of the year & it was end to end stuff. Jimmy Sheehan had a pointed free sandwiched between 2 scores from the Duhallow side to leave the half time score at 0-10 to 1-06 in favour of the home team.

Kanturk once again took off in flying form at the start of the 2nd half with 2 points from play before Cormac Hyland & Sean O’Sullivan had two goals got inside a minute of each other to put Mitchelstown into the lead for the first time in the game , just 5 mins into the second period. It was a tight game now & helped by another Sean O’Sullivan point,  Mitchelstown held their lead until the 18th minute despite Kanturk pushing hard to get back into the game.

However, it was Kanturk who finished the stronger & kicked 1-06 without reply to steal the upper hand before Luke Hanna broke their scoring roll in the 27th minute when he kicked a 45 but again Kanturk finished strongly to kick 2 more points to leave us on the wrong side of the final score of 1-22 to 3-08.

There is much to take from this game with Mitchelstown playing outstanding football for long periods but the fact that Kanturk kicked I think 1-17 of their total from play points to the level of work needed for us to compete against teams of that calibre & that is where we want to be. All in all , a great effort from the lads & with a few more players due back to training in the next couple of weeks, things are heading in the right direction as we ramp things up for our 1st Championship game at the end of July.

Team; L.Hanna (0-01 45), K. Roche, A.Donegan, L. Finn, P. Molloy, R. Donegan,. J. Mullins, S. Walsh(1-00), P. Magee, S. O’Sullivan (1-02), S. Beston, C. Hyland (1-01), J. Sheehan(0-01f), D. Dineen (0-02), S. Kenneally(0-01 f)

Subs; A. O’Brien for R. Donegan (h/t), L. Murphy for S. Kenneally (55 mins) & O. Burke.

Pitch Maintenance

We have recently undertaken  major works on our Limerick Road Pitch in order to have it in top condition over the summer period. The works were carried out by Nagle Sports Turf & necessitated pitch closure for a period for which we are grateful to all teams for their understanding. The pitch is now fully reopened & ready for the long summer.

GAAforALL

GAA for ALL is for children with special and additional needs.

We finished a 6 week pilot last Wednesday with the local group Special Friends , Mitchelstown.

We included fundamental movements, some football skills and introduced basics of hurling last Wednesday.

This proved very successful and enjoyable for the children , parents and coaches.

Intention now is to continue on Wednesdays 6-7 in Limerick Road and open it to all children with needs in the locality.

We are greatly encouraged by recruitment of 7 more coaches this week and would welcome many more for the expected demand for this activity in order to provide the best possible support.
