Mitchelstown Battle Hard To Advance to Semi Final Of The County

Mitchelstown.      3  15

Ballydesmond.     2  12

Mitchelstown travelled to Ballyclough last Saturday to play Ballydesmond in this years quarter Final of the Intermediate Football Championship. The Conditions were tough with all the rain that had fallen on the previous days but both these teams did not seem to notice and produced a great game of football with both giving everything they had. Straight from the throw in both teams went at it with both teams missing chances. On the 4th minute a long ball from Shane Beston was caught and marked by Mark Keane who pointed from the free. Ballydesmond responded with 2 quick points but a Pa Magee free on the 7th min had the teams level. Then a poor kick out was quickly pounced on by the Ballydesmond forward and he duly hit the back of the Mitchelstown net. This was followed by another Ballydesmond point to leave Mitchelstown trailing by 4 points but an intercepted kick out was quickly seized by Mitchelstown and finished brilliantly by Darragh flynn on the 14th minute to leave a point between the teams at the first water break.

On the resumption a Brick Walsh free had the teams level. On the 21 st min Ballydesmond responded and started to get a grip on midfield and kicked two points to put them ahead by 2 but a good individual score by Shane Cahill on the 33rd min left the score 1 05 to 1 06. The teams were level again with another Shane Cahill point on the 35th min. Both teams traded points but then Ballydesmond struck for a goal when a long ball was dropped by the Mitchelstown backs and was cooly finished to the net by the corner forward. This put Mitchelstown trailing by 3 but back came Mitchelstown with every ball been fought for. A good move was finished by Joe O’ Sullivan and this was quickly followed by another point by Mark Keane to leave just 1 between the sides. Ballydesmond quickly counter acted and kicked 3 unanswered points to go 4 clear with 10 min remaining. Mitchelstown were not going to let this go easily and a Brick Walsh point reduced the gap to 3 on the 51st minute. Rhis was followed by a Dylan price point on the 53rd minute. Mitchelstown were laying siege to the Ballydesmond goal but some great saves by the keeper kept their noses in front. All seemed lost when Mitchelstown missed two scorable frees on the 59th and 60th min but then on the 3rd minute of injury time darragh flynn had a bullet of a shot saved by the keeper the rebounding ball was won by dylan price by the corner flag. He played a one two with mark keane who beat two defenders and hit a brilliant shot that ended in the back of the net to put Mitchelstown ahead. Straight from the kickout Ballydesmond won a free 45 yards out and they drew level. The ref blew full time and we headed for extra time.

The noise and excitement was as good as you would get anywhere, even Croke park or the Aviva!! On the resumption Mitchelstown started very well with points by Cahill, Walsh and Price. Mitchelstown were now 3 ahead after 10 minutes and only for Ballydesmond keeper it could have been more. Further points by Beston and Flynn put Town 5 ahead with 5 to play but Ballydesmond were fighting hard. 2 points reduced the gap to 3 going into injury time when a Mitchelstown break saw a great pass by Sheehan to Cahill who passed to Price who finished a great move to the Ballydesmond net. Mitchelstown eventually running out winners by 6. The Mitchelstown players and mentors were delighted with the win but also know they will have to improve to go one better than last year. They will now face Killshannig in the semi final in the coming 2 or 3 weeks.
