Mitchelstown advanced to this year's Bon Secours IFC county final with a superb performance against a very strong and gritty Aghabullogue side back in Mallow last Sunday. To say conditions were difficult would be an understatement, a very strong wind swirling around was going to make it difficult for the players. Aghabullogue won the toss and decided to play with the wind but it was Mitchelstown who started the quicker and a very well taken opening score by Shane Cahill in the 3rd minute was followed by a Cathail O'Mahony point in the 5^th minute.

Mitchelstown's midfield pairing of Sean Walsh and Colin English were dominating. A great catch by Walsh from the kickout was quickly delivered to Cahill who kicked a great point after 10 minutes. Aghabullogue responded and had their first score in the 15^th min, but back came Mitchelstown with further points by O'Mahony in the 17th and 19th minute.

In the 22nd minute a good Aghabullogue move ended with a great save by keeper Luke Hanna. Points followed by Aghabullogue in the 24th and 25th minutes, but a great individual effort by Sean O'Sullivan ended with a great point to leave the score 0-8 to 0-3. Mitchelstown started the 2^nd half with a strong wind and a 5 point lead and quickly increased it with a Pa Magee point in the 44^th minute. Then in the 47th minute a ball turned over on the town back line by Greg Carroll was quickly moved up the field and some great movement by Jim Sheehan and 'Brick Walsh ended with Cathail O'Mahony calmly placing the ball in the back of the net to put Mitchelstown in very strong position. Aghabullogue responded well with 2 points. Then a long ball by O'Mahony ended up in the back of the net and put Mitchelstown 9 points ahead.

A superb Sean Walsh point was followed by a great 'Brick Walsh score. Mitchelstown were in complete control now and a Seamus Coleman point, after a great move from the backline, ended the scoring, leaving Mitchelstown reaching the final on a 2-13 to 0-7 scoreline.

The Mitchelstown management were delighted with the performance with every one of the 20 lads playing. For me it was the best first 30 minutes of football I have seen by any Mitchelstown team. Now they will face a very strong Rockchapel team in the final.

Well Done

Congratulations to our under 12 footballers who won the North Cork Championship last Sunday morning back in Mallow, followed up a few hours later with the under 14 hurlers winning. Well done to all involved, a great weekend for the parish.

Congratulations also to Robbie Cotter, who won a county senior hurling medal with Blackrock last Sunday. He is the son of Aidan Cotter who played corner forward for Mitchelstown in the 90’s. Robbie scored 2-2 in last weeks win over Glen Rovers. There was a lot of celebration last Sunday night by his uncle Kieran and a very proud Gerry Wiley, Robert Street.
