Mitchelstown 0-6 Mallow 1-9

Mitchelstown went down to a very strong Mallow team in last Monday's North Cork JB(2)C semi-final. This Mallow team was loaded with some very talented individuals on their side, including ex captain of Cork u20 and numerous players that have played with Avondhu over the years. Mallow started the game at a very strong pace and intensity, our boys were a small bit intimidated. Points by Mallow in the 3rd and 5th minute was followed by a well worked goal coming all the way from the full back line. Down by 5 in the opening 10mins, Mitchelstown started to turn on the style. Points in the 12th and 15th mins by Liam Keane had us back in the game., Mallow were piling on the pressure with their slick passing and running game but to be fair to the defence some terrific defending by Barry Coffey and Mike Maher kept them at bay. Sean Howard added a point to reduce the gap to 1-5 to 0-3 at half-time. Mitchelstown started the 2nd half strongly and had the better of the game in the opening 10 minutes, but failed to turn possession into scores. Mallow added a point on the 12th min to go 6 points in front. The 'Town boys refused to give in and some towering performances by Cillian Dollion, Owen Burke and Seamus Coleman drove the team forward. Points in the 17th and 19th minutes by Sean Howard were quickly followed by a Liam Keane point, reducing the gap to 3 entering the final 10 minutes. The story of the last 10 was Mallow took their opportunities when presented with them and added points in the 24th, 27th and 30th minutes to run out deserving winners. This was a very enjoyable game played at a high tempo. Our management team of Shane Beston and Stephen Fox can be delighted with the way the boys played. Their commitment and determination was admirable and definitely a few put their hands up for selection for the Cork IFC quarter-final this weekend.

Team: M Furey, B Coffey, M Maher, K Fox, S Coleman, O Burke, L Flynn, J Mullins, S Barrett, P O'Gorman, (captain), S Howard, C Dollion, L Keane, A Donegan, J Gubbins. Subs M Sheehan, K Wren, M O'Gorman, D Ronayne.
