O’Mahony masterclass sweeps Mitchelstown to Cork IFC final

It was O’Mahony’s two-goal burst after half-time that finished the game as a contest

Cork IFC: Mitchelstown 2-13  Aghabollogue 0-7

Mitchelstown led from start to finish in Mallow today as they secured their place in the final of the Bons Secours Cork IFC at the expense of Aghabollogue.

They were full value for their victory as they used their physical advantage to the full, adapted to the elements better and in Cathail O’Mahony, they have a forward of genuine class.

It was O’Mahony’s two-goal burst after half-time that finished the game as a contest. His side led by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break before his team-mate Patrick Magee traded scores with Aghabollogue’s Evan O’Sullivan.

O’Mahony then struck for his first goal, calmly slotting the ball past the onrushing John Buckley after brilliant work from James Sheehan and Michael Walsh.

Luke Casey responded well for the Muskerry side with two frees but then O’Mahony’s effort for a point ended up in the top-corner to give his side an unassailable 2-9 to 0-6 lead as they broke for water. To make matters worse for Aghabollogue, they lost the impressive Casey to injury.

Mitchelstown did what they needed to from there to the end, soaking up the Aghabollogue pressure before breaking quickly to strike for the points that they required. O’Mahony, Sean Walsh, Michael Walsh and Seamus Coleman all split the posts while all the mid-Cork side could muster in response was a point from Matthew Bradley.

Mitchelstown played into the elements in the opening period and adapted to it well, moving the ball at pace through the hands while keeping enough men back to limit Aghabollogue’s options in attack.

In truth, it took the wind out of the Muskerry side’s sails as they struggled to get the ball into their full-forward line. A Cathal O’Mahony free and two points from Shane Cahill gave them a three point lead after 15 minutes.

Aghabollogue were frustrated at this stage and had kicked four wides but Paul Ring was playing well at centre-back and when Luke Casey made it 0-3 to 0-1 at the water break, they had found their feet.

However, it was Mitchelstown who settled more quickly again as O’Mahony kicked two more points and Sean O’Sullivan also found the range. Bradley and Casey responded for the mid-Cork men to leave them trailing by 0-6 to 0-3 as the clock edged past 30 minutes.

Crucially, Mitchelstown managed to sneak in two more points from O’Mahony and Michael Walsh before the break to give them a 0-8 to 0-3 lead as they turned to play with the wind.

O’Mahony then stamped his class on the occasion to set-up an intriguing clash with Rockchapel next weekend.

Mitchelstown 3-20 Kinsale 2-10

MITCHELSTOWN are through to the semi-finals of the Bon Secours Cork IAFC as they deservedly defeated Kinsale 3-20 to 2-10 in Carrigtwohill on Saturday afternoon.

A stunning display from the Town’s forwards, led by Cathail O’Mahony with eight points and two goals from substitute Aaron O’Brien, was enough to see them win this quarter-final clash by 13 points to set up a final four showing with Aghabullogue in two weeks.

The Red and Blacks raced out of the traps and they were ahead 1-5 to no score by the seventh minute with Sean O’Sullivan grabbing the goal with a powerful finish.

Kinsale couldn’t live with their opponent’s pace and power and they would only grab four points before the half time break while Mitchelstown added 10 more points in that time - O’Mahony clinical from play and from frees - to ensure they led at the interval, 1-15 to 0-4.

Although the leaders extended their advantage thanks to a Darragh Flynn point shortly after the resumption, Kinsale rallied and began to reduce the deficit with the excellent Gearoid Finn drilling a penalty into the top left corner in amongst three more unanswered points, 1-16 to 1-7.

But they had given themselves too high of a mountain to climb and Mitchelstown hit back strongly with a brace of coolly finished goals from substitute Aaron O’Brien helping to seal their place in the semis with conviction.

First, he planted the ball past the keeper following an excellent catch and after three more overs for his side, the forward drilled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

That would be their final score of the game but Kinsale would snatch 1-2 in injury time - including a superb volley from Timmy Broderick into the far top right corner - to reduce the margin of defeat.

Scorers for Mitchelstown: C O’Mahony 0-8 (0-3 f), A O’Brien 2-0, S O’Sullivan 1-0, M Walsh and J Sheehan 0-3 (0-1 frees) each, D Flynn 0-2, P Molloy, S Walsh, C English and S Cahill 0-1 each.

Cathail O'Mahony and Mitchelstown are on song in beating Glanworth

Mitchelstown 2-14 Glanworth 1-9

FAVOURITES Mitchelstown got their 2020 intermediate football championship campaign off to the best possible start Sunday afternoon with a dominant display over neighbours and fierce rivals Glanworth at Mallow.

The men in red and black took the game to Glanworth in a manner that their fellow Avondhu side struggled to cope with setting down a marker for all the other sides in this division.

The early exchanges were fast and furious with both sides making their mark on the scoreboard with ease.

Glanworth led with a brace of scores from Shae O’Riordan and Stephen Condon while Mitchelstown kept pace with a point from Mikey Walsh.

Still only three minutes on the clock and Mitchelstown bagged the first major with a composed finish from Cathail O’Mahony which was followed by another brace to push them into a three-point advantage.

Glanworth stuck to their task but it was Mitchelstown that had the bit between their teeth and another O’Mahony point was followed by a second goal – this time it was Shane Cahill that did the damage.

The victors cruised to the water break and on to the half time interval with some sublime scores and a work-rate that few sides at this or any other grade could muster.

Glanworth did manage one late score in the half to cut the gap to 10 points but even with 30 left it was clear that this one was going to be difficult to save.

Glanworth were never likely to let this one slide so easy and as the sides traded heavy hits Glanworth got a lifeline with a goal from first-half substitute Diarmuid Colfer.

Another sub, Mikie Sheehan bagged a trio of points late on but the result really wasn’t in doubt from a distance out.

Scorers for Mitchelstown: C O’Mahony 1-8 (0-6 f); S Cahill 1-1, M Walsh 0-2 f, A Walsh, D Reidy-Price, C English 0-1 each.
