Stay Apart To Stay Safe

Mitchelstown Gaa club are urging all members, parents and the general public to stay apart to stay safe over the coming period. Covid 19 will only be beaten if everyone takes it seriously and do the right thing. Social distancing will save the lives of parents, grandparents and relatives and friends with health issues. We urge you to be responsible not to go out or converge in groups as this creates a risk to life. During this torrid time, we would encourage people to keep a diary of all places they visit and a list of people they have been in contact with. If this is done and the need a rises it will make the Contact Tracing teams job a lot easier in the weeks ahead.

Looking Back in time to 1995

During these unprecedented times we will take a look back to Mitchelstown bridging a twenty-year gap in retaining the North Cork Junior Football championship. Michael Horgan pulled no punches and stated that commitment needs a lot to be desired. Mitchelstown began the season with some good wins in the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy football leagues and easily qualified for the semi final a game in which they went under on score line of 2-10 to 2-06. Mitchelstown opened the championship season with a convincing win over Dell Rovers which set them up against neighbours Fermoy in the semi-final. Avenge for there defeat in the league semi was delayed as both teams played out 0-8 apiece draw on a beautiful summer’s day in Araglen. Mitchelstown were victorious in the replay and Mallow were to be there final opponents in a game once again fixed for Araglen. Mitchelstown were winners on a score of 0-10 to 0-6 with 0-8 supplied from John Barrett and Dave Moher. The team was as follows Alan Griffin, Niall O Donnell, Denis Maher, John Cleary, Declan Power (Capt), Diarmuid Lynch, John McGrath, John Walsh, Mick Beston, John Barrett, Padraig Donegan, Ned Finn, Willie Kenneally Dave Moher Kieran Cotter. Subs used Aidan Cotter, Peter Conroy and Cyril Kiely. The celebrations took its toll and Town went under to Glenville in the County quarter final the following Sunday in Castlelyons. Though there was no other success in the club for the year pleasure can be taken in that we fielded two under 21 championship teams. The hope was that the foundation was laid for the following year.
