Help Each other

Mitchelstown Gaa club adult and juvenile members in conjunction with Sean Farrell of Super Valu have made themselves available for all types of collections and deliveries over the coming weeks of severe restrictions to assist all people. While we are asking people via social media and facebook the people who may need the assistance might not be on theses social media links and I ask members to keep their eyes and ears open and don’t be afraid to contact people. Aron Walsh of Walsh Removals will provide us with transport if required and we are indebted to Aron for his help

Looking Back in time to 1965

Whilst the Intermediate football championship was due to commence in Cork this weekend we have decided to take a look at Mitchelstown’s last title at this grade in 1965. Mitchelstown were also Intermediate county champions in 1911,1925 and 1929 when the grade was the second highest competition in the county. The Cork county board recommenced the intermediate football championship in 1965 and Mitchelstown were one of the eight teams included by the County board to compete in this championship. The first round of the championship was against Delaney’s in Fermoy on May31st and with top scorer Mickey Barrett contributing 0-6 Mitchelstown ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-08. The semi final opponents were the 1964 county junior football champions Kiskeam in a game played in atrocious conditions in Buttevant on August 23rd. An opportunist goal from Tom Monaghan mid-way through the second half saw Mitchelstown reach the final on a score of 1-05 to 0-3. St Vincent’s were the opposition at Midleton on Oct 11th. Mitchelstown ended the season on compulsory demotion by winning there way back to senior football ranks and the first club to lift the Billy Long Memorial trophy. This was a tough game with 44 frees in which Mitchelstown were awarded 30. Midfield dominance by Mick Burke and Michael O Brien and goals by Tom Monaghan and Mickie Barret ensured Mitchelstown returned to senior ranks winning on a score of 2-8 to 1-5. Vice-captain John McGrath was presented with the cup as Ned Coughlan had suffered a serious knee injury.
